The City of Visalia, California is seeking bids for the removal of a 130 acre walnut orchard. Work involved with this project includes, but is not limited to, orchard removal, grading, weed control and disposal. Although not listed in the bid, removal or the orchard may be due to desires to expand urban development, potentially making room for a multitude of buildings, including housing, commercial spaces, or infrastructure. On the other hand, removal of the walnut orchard could possibly be due to new land use regulations that make it more challenging to maintain the land within city limits. In some cases, the presence of an orchard may lead to concerns about water usage, pesticide application, or habitat disruption.
Orchards require a significant amount of water to maintain, especially in dry climates such as California. This high demand can strain local water resources, and can exacerbate droughts or water scarcities. In addition, the walnut market can be volatile, and is easily influenced by global supply and demand, changing consumer preferences, and other competition, further making maintenance troublesome. Perhaps one of the biggest issues is monoculture farming, which decreases biodiversity and can lead to soil degradation and vulnerability to being ravaged by pests and diseases, ultimately impacting long-term sustainability.
Whatever the reason, Visalia wants the walnut orchard gone. To find more information, including the cost and time of completion, click on the link. The bid closes October 22, 2024 at 1:00 PM PDT.
